His talent on the field set him apart, however, his intense focus for soccer came at a cost—his academic performance suffered, and he found himself repeating a year in school. It was a humbling experience that pushed him to rethink his future beyond the sport.
While his parents envisioned a career for him in architecture, Josemaria’s heart was set on philosophy. He was captivated by the complexities of human thought and chose to follow his passion, even though it went against his parents’ wishes. Studying philosophy gave him a new lens to view the world, but his academic journey took an unexpected turn when a chance encounter with a computer changed everything. In that moment, Josemaria felt an unexplainable magnetic pull toward technology, recognizing it as something that would profoundly shape his future. He switched his major to computer science, diving headfirst into this new world of possibilities.
He started his entrepreneurial journey by developing a suite of software applications for businesses in Venezuela, solidifying his position as a leader in the local technology industry. But the call for more—more discovery, more innovation—was impossible to ignore. He left his thriving business and all the ’financial success’ behind and moved to the U.S. with his family, fueled by the belief that he was meant for something bigger, the American Dream.
Josemaria started working in Research and Development for Wang Laboratories in Lowell, Massachusetts as a Principal Software Engineer. His curiosity led him to team up with a group of engineers outside of Wang, where they developed and patented a revolutionary data storage solution, that came to be known as RAID 5. This experience reconfirmed what he had long believed—technology had the power to reshape the world.
Josemaria’s journey took him to Accenture (previously Andersen Consulting), where he climbed the ranks to Associate Partner, using his strategic insights to help businesses harness technology to fuel growth. His journey continued at Microsoft, where he served as the regional technology strategist for Latin America. Here, Josemaria’s vision took on a broader scope—he didn’t just help businesses adopt new tools, he guided them through the profound process of digital transformation.
